Don't have an internship lined up for the upcoming (2022) summer yet?

No problem...

You may have friends or know of other college students who already have internships in place for next summer, but don't let this get you down.

Here's the good news...

With so many businesses offering remote internship positions, you're going to have a lot of opportunities to choose from... both remote and in person.

With this said, remote positions do come with a couple of challenges...

First... you're going to have a lot more competition for these remote positions than in person internship positions in your area. Instead of competing with only people who live within commuting distance, you're now competing with the entire world.

So, it's important to understand this and have realistic expectations. This doesn't mean you should lower your standards and not go after the best internships in your field... it just means that you need to get started now and bring your "A Game."

Second... you won't learn as much in a remote setting as you will in an in person setting. This may not be true 100% of the time, but it's been my experience that working on a remote team lacks the many learning opportunities that come up when you're working in the same physical space.

Time To Start Finding Positions

Blasting out your resume to a bunch of companies will have a very low probability of success.

Just as I talk about in "Internship Mastery," you need to take a more calculated and strategic approach.

Leverage your network. Look for connections who work at organizations with internships you're interested in. This could be first degree connections or even second degree connections.

And, consider looking for internships at smaller companies (including small businesses and early stage startups) where you'll likely have less competition and where there will be much less red tape.

Early stage startups often don't have much cash, so you'll have to be willing to take much less than market pay or even consider working for free. This may not be a bad option for you though if the opportunity will allow you to significantly grow your skills.

I know the "free internship" route is not a realistic option for all students because you may have bills to pay. But if it's an option for you, it will open up some additional doors.

Get Started Now

Don't put this process off. Get organized, and make a list of the steps you need to take to land an internship.

Remember, although it's not too late to land a great internship for this upcoming summer... every day you wait, internship opportunities are going to be taken by other students.

So... get started now.
